My 20 top tips for pounding the pavement like a pro!

Jogging can be such an exhilarating form of exercise. Not much beats the rush of pushing your body to the limits, pounding the pavement and knowing you've got your heartbeat up to full notch! It's inexpensive, portable and can be done solo or with others - winning, I'd say!

Super comfortable Gel-Kayano 20s make me jump for joy!

You'll probably remember last month, that I went and got fitted for a pair of the new Gel-Kayano 20s  - a range exclusively released through the Athlete's Foot - and since then I have not looked back. Without a doubt these would have to be the most comfortable shoes I've ever trained in and because I consider purchasing a decent running shoe to be an investment in my health, they've proven themselves time and time again in the month or so I've had them.

But really, getting into running is actually a bit more complicated than just pulling on your ASICS and getting out there. There are certain things that you should take into consideration when preparing to take-up jogging as your exercise of choice. There are also some things to keep in mind while you jog as well as some important things to remember to do after your running workout.

Top 20 running tips

Whether you're new to the jogging scene, or a long-time runner, it's always good to refresh on some key points and check this out ...  the Fitness, Food and Style Top 20 tips for Running.

1. Warm your muscles up for at least 5 minutes before jogging. Brisk walking and/or stretches should ensure you are ready to rock and roll!

2. Shorter steps landing on the middle part of your foot is less likely to cause an injury that longer strides landing heavily on your heel.

3. Steady, combo breathing through both your nose and mouth will give you higher oxygen levels than just breathing through your nose alone.

4. Wearing old or worn out running shoes is an invitation to injury. It's the internal cushioning more than the tread that you have to look out for and as a rule of thumb you should replace running shoes around the 500km mark or every 3-6 months. I'll definitely be returning to the Athlete's Foot for another pair of Gel Kayano 20s at replacement time, because I'm yet to have a shoe that's come close to the cushioning and support of these.

5. If you are a beginner - or even recovering from illness - alternate jogging with some brisk walking. You can decrease the walking time and ramp up the running time as your fitness builds.

6. Mix it up with personal challenges - these can be in the form of distances or times. Maybe even a new route to keep things interesting.

7. Ladies, look after the girls by investing in a good quality sports bra. Jogging should not mean jiggling ;)

8. If your workout time means running in early light or on dusk, be sure to wear light colour tops or something hi-vis and fluro to be easily seen by traffic.

9. Try to limit your water intake during the 30 minutes before running. Having a belly full of liquid can be uncomfortable and lead to cramping. That said, be sure to take a water bottle with you.

10. Don't feel obliged to run every day of the week - having a break day and jogging 6 days out of 7 is actually recommended by exercise experts.

11. Remember that safety is important: carry a mobile phone, don't listen to music so loud that you are unaware of your surroundings and when possible jog in well lit and populated areas.

12. When you're a beginning jogger, the first few weeks will be the toughest. Embrace it! You'll find it does get easier!

13. Did you know the effect that running has on your mind and body is thought to be addictive? Start and you won't stop ;)

14. If you're looking at running as a fat-burning exercise, you'll be pleased to know that it burns 28% more fat than cycling! Yet another great reason to pull on those trainers and get moving today!

15. Bonus points if you have access to a treadmill. On days where you can't get outside into the fresh air, treadmill running is just as good for you.

16. When going to purchase a new pair of running shoes, make sure you take the socks with you that you intend on wearing. It's likely that your feet are slightly different sizes so buy a pair that is most comfortable for the 'bigger' foot.

17. Be sure of your new running shoe purchase by taking your current pair with you so an easy comparison can be made about feel - cushioning and comfort - without having to rely on how you think the old ones feel. Good running shoes represent an investment, so you'll want the best possible pair in your price range. The Kayano 20s have been worth every cent of the outlay.

18. Don't be too hard on yourself about your running - although pushing yourself is great, running for personal exercise is not a competition or race. Listen to your body and enjoy it!

19. You've warmed up, you've run like a champ so don't forget to cool down at the end! Stretching your muscles after exercise is often overlooked but so very important!

20. If you're thinking of taking up running, but are yet to start, remember to get the all clear from your doctor. You could also consider seeking the advice of a professional to help organise a suitable running schedule to get you going.

If you're a keen runner, what tips or advice could you add to the list above? I'd love to hear your suggestions and feedback in the comments.

Happy jogging!

Much love and friendship

Packing for a cruise ... my 20 must have items!

You can probably imagine how excited I was when I got the call inviting me to join Shannon Ponton (the PT from The Biggest Loser) and media teams from Fitness First and Women's Health on a Carnival Cruise. Yep, very!

One of the best things about blogging here at Fitness, Food and Style is being able to work for pleasure. It's something I'd always aspired to achieve so this, my friends, is job satisfaction and I'm living my dream.

If I can, then you can too!

Marc Anthony once said "if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life" and I think he's right and so, at almost 40 years of age, I've got my perfect job.

While you are reading this, and for the next few days, I'll be working away. On a boat, cruising towards Vanuatu and I seriously can't wait!

All this excitement leads to a dilemma of sorts ... what the heck to pack when going on a cruise?

In times like this, I call for inspiration and direction from famous words, and for the next few days while cruising, this is the mantra I shall be living by ....

"Look famous.
Be legendary.
Appear complex.
Act easy.
Radiate presence
Travel light
Seem a dream
Prove real"

Ok, so travel light. That's a bit of a challenge but I'm determined it's doable.

Luckily I've been on a cruise before now and that experience is coming in handy!

Here then is a list of the 20 essentials I'm packing in my luggage:

1. MacBook Pro - yes, its work related remember ;)
2. iPhone - would never be without it anywhere ;)
3. Tinted moisturiser - for an easy up and go and sun protection in one
4. Swimsuit -  my new chevron patterned one piece will be ideal
5. Sandals - party shoes for dancing the night away
6. Nausea tablets - not anticipating trouble but just in case
7. Thongs - cruise essentials ... of course
8. Sunhat - would never be without it in the tropics
9. Shorts - great combo with tees and dress up with chevron halter top!
10. Neon yellow belt - my inspiration colour for the week

Loving my Seafolly chevron halter neck swimsuit

11. Clutch & jewellery - just to dress up my casual look
12. Lip balm/gloss - I never leave home without it
13. Sports drink bottle - hydrate 24x7
14. Toiletries - toothbrush, paste, hair products, make-up etc...
15. 2XU Quick Dry Towel - I'm sure Shannon will make us sweat!
16. Workout/yoga gear - always nice to sweat it out but meditation is my thing
17. Blue reflector aviators - look famous remember
18. MILK Sunscreen - an absolute must lounging beside the pool
19. Neon yellow nail polish - funky wear for my nails in keeping with the tropical them
20. ASICS Gel-Kayano runners my new kicks for sprinting around the ship, keeping active

Happy 20th Birthday Asics! Loving the Gel-Kayano runners

I'm so looking forward to learning some PT tips from one of the best in the business as well as hanging with some pros in the fitness/well being media camp. Not to mention all of this on a fabulous cruise liner heading to paradise .... still pinching myself, but my passport in my hand so it must be real!

I told you I had the world's best job right? Some good news is the ship has free wi-fi, so I'll be posting updates and snippets on Instagram for you to share the excitement with me. Can't wait to tell you more about the Vanuatu experience once I get back.

Are you working your dream job too? Tell me what you do that you love!

Much love & friendship.

Happy 20th birthday Asics Gel-Kayano!

A new family member has joined The Stevens house hold, let me introduce you to the beautiful Kayano 20!!!!

As you all know, last week I went to The Athlete's Foot to get fitted into some new Asics and WOW!!!! I learnt some great things from the team as they told me when we run, our feet absorb the shock of 2.5 times our body weight. What people often don’t understand is how the overall body can be impacted by a poorly fitted shoe. Feet can protect themselves and shift the pain to our shins, back and shoulders.

What I love about Asics and the new Gel-Kayano 20

They are super comfortable, it's like walking on a spongy cloud (there is ample of cushioning AKA Fluid Ride which is a 2 layered midsole with a top & bottom layer) so smooth, silky (AKA Fluid Fit multi-directional stretch fabric that improves fit and comfort) and so light! They are unreal! I now understand why people change their runners frequently. As soon as you stop feeling like you are walking or running on cloud 9, its time to get a new pair. For most people, this is about every 6-10 months, depending on your level of activity.

I feel like running a marathon in these bad boys. Even my intense Freeletics workouts with the interval sprints, 2kms runs  and burpees I am doing, the shock absorption is amazing. Above is me in action over the weekend, listening to a bit of Lady Gaga performing as many burpees within 300 seconds (5 minutes) x 3 rounds.

Since the new Asics range has launched first at The Athlete’s Foot and in exclusive colours in their stores, I visited the team at Ballarat. The Fitting experience was fabulous and was my first pair of Asics fitted in over 10 years!!!! In a nutshell, the team at The Athlete’s Foot are very thorough and knowledgeable - they measure your feet, get you to step and walk on this cool intelligent pad which displays how much pressure, stability and balance you have on each foot. You are then given a summary of your "static snapshot" report and with the help of their fit technician team, voilá you walk out of the store in some runners that are fit to your unique feet. You can read more about your Fitprint here.

Getting fitted in Asics at The Athlete's Foot

I was thrilled to try all the new colours and the range of the new ASICS runners which are exclusive to The Athlete's Foot. Even the staff were excited to have their first customer fitted in the new ASICS 20 year anniversary runners. They don't hit other retail stores for a couple of weeks, so I felt a bit spesh. See the new Asics range here.

I tried all 4 styles of the new Asics range -  GT 2000 2, GEL Nimbus 15 and the GT 1000 2. I ended up being fitted to the Kayano 20 as it provided more arch support for my feet.

Kayano 20, GT 2000, GEL Nimbus

These Asics runners range from $149.95-$229.95. Mine were $249.95. We all know healthy starts from the feet up and I would much rather invest in my health, then pay unnecessary injury hospital/doctor fees. Do you agree?

So for any of my readers that need a new pair of running shoes head to your local The Athlete's Foot store as they are the knowledgeable ones when it comes to fitting the right runners for you.

And how about winning your own exclusive pair of Asics runners here on Fitness Food And Style?
