Supercharge your health and eat fresh

When Fitness First told me I had $250 to spend this month to super charge our health and fitness, what better way than to get a couple of spiralizers AKA 3 in 1 slicer apparatus. I want to encourage my Mum to kick start her #standfullyraw challenge too, she's back from Serbia in a couple of months.

The kids had a ball creating spiral apple spagetti. They simply couldn't get enough.

Mietta shares her spiral apple ring.

We have also super charged ourselves to revamp our very own veggie patch. Currently we have parsley, rosemary and various other greens in wine barrels but seriously need to make more space and start from scratch.

So we went seed shopping....

We have a few ideas with our new veggie garden design but this one totally caught my eye at the Fitness Expo a couple of weeks ago.

What do you think??? An internal fruit box/salad and veggie wall patch display.

Pretty cool huh???

Up close....

Let's just say I have written a list of all the materials for Adrian to go down to our local Bunnings Warehouse and start this mini wall project.

Do you prefer an indoor or outdoor veggie garden?

Which reminds me. Here are just a few snippets of my time at the Fitness Expo in Melbourne. I was a little chuffed seeing myself on a huge poster at the Lorna Jane stand and meeting CEO Bill Clarkson, green juice star extraordinaire Zac, marketing manager from Fitness First and Body Science Founder Nathan.

Super cool people!

Thanks again Fitness First for partnering with Fitness Food And Style.

Working out for a week and eating like Bake Bike Blog

I always love a challenge and this month Fitness First has got us exchanging workouts with the other bloggers for the #changeforthebest campaign. So when I got super fit and healthy Lisa's Bake Bike Blogs' workout session this week and her fave healthy recipes, I was over the moon.

It's always good to mix things up and to see what other people are cooking in the kitchen and how they lead a healthy lifestyle.

So here goes my 1 week working out and eating like …..

I love the fact that Lisa makes her workouts quick and snappy. It's how I roll as I do not work out for more than 15 minutes per day or 30 minutes every second day.

Yes there is always a smile on my face when there is a quick workout ahead….

Fitness Food And Style running workout

So basically Lisa runs 5km on Monday……..

Wednesday and Friday (sometimes before work, mostly outside - but she also uses her treadmill if she can't make it outside) and then a bike ride over the weekend. So what did I do????? I just ran…..

So this was just perfect for me. I love the outdoors and with my recent Ride To Conquer Cancer bike event it was great being back on the bike too.

Lisa also shares her favourite healthy recipes with us. Her favourite “go to” salad is a Maple Tahini Lentil salad. Lovely for lunch, or served as a side salad with dinner - it is vegetarian, gluten free and packed with flavour. It's also perfect for our #fullyraw challenge this month.

Maple-tahini lentil salad
  • 1.5 cups cooked lentils
  • 6 tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 cucumber, diced
  • 1 red capsicum, diced
  • 1 cob corn, kernels only
  • handful fresh parsley, chopped
  • handful fresh mint, chopped
  • 2 tbs tahini
  • 1 tbs maple syrup
  • 1 tbs dijon mustard
  • 4 tbs water
Method
  1. Combine the salad ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. To make the dressing, whisk together the tahini, maple syrup and dijon mustard. Add the water, 1 tablespoon at a time, stirring well to combine and until the desired consistency is reached.
  3. Drizzle a generous portion of the dressing over the salad to serve.

How about these healthy muffins Lisa baked?

Apple Chai Muffins

Apple Chai Muffins (makes 8 large)
  • 220g self raising flour
  •  2 tbs chai powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup skim milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup greek / natural yoghurt
  • 1 apple grated (+ an extra half sliced thinly)
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 180C, and line a muffin tin with paper cases.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour and chai powder.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining wet ingredients.
  4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, and pour in the wet ingredients. Mix until just combined (don’t over-mix).
  5. Spoon the batter into prepared muffin cases to about 2/3 full.
  6. Finish by pressing a couple apple slices into the centre of each muffin.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cooked.
  8. Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then place on a wire rack.

Ask a Nutritionist before embarking on a new eating plan with Kathy Widjaja

I'm loving working with the team at Fitness First and another big congratulations to Michelle Vamvas for being our #changeforthebest winner. We can't wait to see you working out in all that fitness gear!!!

It's great to have fitness and food resources at your finger tips so when Fitness First asked whether I would like a one-on-one Q&A with their Nutritionist, I said yes please.

Let me introduce you to the lovely Kathy Widjaja, Personal Trainer at Fitness First and Holistic Lifestyle Coach at Aequilibrium Holistic Health.

Here are the 5 questions I asked...

1. Many eating fads or popular/celebrity diets focus on eliminating a whole food group - e.g. no fat, no carbs, no meat or no sugar etc. Is there much of a scientific basis to the benefits or detriments of this type of radical change to someone's diet?

Eliminating an entire macronutrient is never a good idea.  The human body needs both fat and protein to build cells (remember that our bodies are making a million cells a second!) and carbohydrates for physical and mental energy.  Depriving our bodies of an entire macronutrient will essentially mean that some of our basic functions would not be able to be carried out properly – which is likely to lead to lethargy, mood swings, brain fog and other symptoms.  What is important to remember that everyone is bio-individually unique – meaning that the proportion of fat, protein and carbohydrates in your diet are unique to you.  Trial and error, as well as getting to know your body well are the best ways to figure out what foods will work well for you.

2. We all know that junk food should not be a diet staple, but what tips do you have for beating sugar or salt cravings when transitioning away from unhealthy foods.

My top tip is always to crowd bad foods out.  We often try to take out all the “bad” things from our diet all at once, leaving holes in our eating plan which we are likely to fill with more “bad” things because our cravings are unsatisfied and we are also hungry!

The concept of “crowding out” essentially means adding more good stuff into your diet so that your body is more nutritionally satisfied, which will hopefully lessen the need to lean towards junk food.  For example, if you are used to eating something sugary from breakfast, why not try to have a piece of fruit first, and less than your normal portion of the sugary item?  You will already be making inroads into curbing your cravings without actually depriving yourself.  You can then slowly take steps into curbing these cravings completely.

It is also a good idea to speak to a health coach about why you are getting these cravings in the first place – many cravings can also be a result of the lack of nutrients, emotional instability, the lack of water or an imbalance in your existing diet.

3. Should someone need to take vitamins or other nutritional supplements when undertaking a reduced calorie eating program?

Even whilst on a reduced calorie eating program, you should always aim to be eating lots of fresh and unprocessed food.  Aim for variety and quality in your diet and this in itself will guarantee that you are getting the majority of the essential vitamins and minerals that your body requires for optimal function.

A good multivitamin is usually a good bang for your buck if you lead an especially demanding lifestyle and I normally start incorporating superfoods into my client’s diets as well as an extra way to quickly boost their nutritional power and energy levels without an excessive calorie load!

4. Is the traditional food pyramid still considered to be the way we should be eating ... or have there been changes to the recommendations?

The traditional food pyramid is definitely still in existence and is still commonly referred to.  It is important to note, however, that the traditional food pyramid is very generalised in terms of fat, protein and carbohydrate make-up of a diet and may not be the right fit for you.  The most important thing to remember is to try to eat as much fresh and unprocessed food as possible, and always buy the best quality produce and animal products that you can afford.

5. It’s often been said that weight management is 80% diet related and 20% exercise related. Is it possible to change that balance?

If one of these factors had to be singled out, diet would still probably prevail as the more important factor because we are essentially taking external items and putting them into our body.  What we put into our bodies ultimately determines how our body functions and what we are able to output.  The food that we put into our bodies is externally reflected in our energy levels, or skin and hair, the brightness of our eyes, and our general performance.

In saying that however, exercise is also important because most of us don’t get enough movement throughout the day.  Our bodies were designed to move!  The most important thing is to keep our body moving – weight management is not all about pushing out hours on the treadmill each week, but more about being consistent in your exercise and doing something that you enjoy so that it easily integrates into your lifestyle for the long term.

Hi everyone, it's a brand New Year and I am super excited that we are all focused on reaching our new goals for 2014. A new year gives us the opportunity to re-evaluate and refocus our attention to what we want to achieve.

As you all know, I was extremely fortunate to go away to the Gymea Retreat recently. The retreat was facilitated by the amazing Amber from Bloom Wellness and was just an experience I cannot recommend highly enough. I met some amazing people and totally got inspired by the health practitioners and professionals that were there to help us reach our goals. I also met my "sister from another mister" Nicole Joy and look forward to our friendship blossoming.

WOWZA!! What a really relaxing time, it's the best thing ever! A retreat is exactly what a health practitioner ordered!

If you have never been to a wellness retreat, you may be wondering what to expect and think it is geared up specifically for hippies. Not the case and here's what I experienced - it was a total escape outta this world, solace, a haven for getting away from the grind and reflecting inward. It gave me a chance to reconnect with myself, solve some challenges I had prior to attending, gave me a fresh outlook and perspective on life. It restored my health and hey, I even dropped a few kilograms with eating all that raw food :-)

I know we're all busy, trust me I know. With 4 kids under 8 years I am constantly on the move so this came at exactly the right time.  A retreat gives you time to reflect on your life, ponder your next move and questions whether your lifestyle supports your wellness aspirations.

Although I was able to attend an offsite retreat, I understand this is not physically or financially possible for everyone. With this in mind, there are other ways to achieve this goal.

To find nirvana, you need the tools of the trade along with a quiet space to put this into practice.

So leave me your comments below with your #changeforthebetter health and wellness goals for 2014 and please add your Instagram and Facebook username if you have one.

Much love and friendship,

xxDani
